There must be thousands of published snare drum solos, and it is refreshing to find one that is unique in form, content, and expression. The solo opens in 7/8, and the tempo marking specifies the solobe performed at quarter note equaling 112. This first section takes advantage of shifting accents, but also has moments of silence. It is interesting that the composer has incorporated several meters including, 6/8, 3/4, and 4/4, as this section closes with a group of sixteenth notes and rolls. This closing burst of material creatively winds down by using sextuplets, to sixteenths, to triplets, then eighth notes, to quarter-note triplets, to single notes.
The next section, or interlude, explores tone colors by changing from snares on and snares off, playing with a
brush in one hand against a stick in the
other, and rimshots. The rhythms are
more spacious in this section as well. This material leads to a phrase of accents
in triplets, then sixteenths, which have a variety of single strokes mixed with
rebounds, all creating an energetic transi-
tion to the closing, which is again in 7/8.
Many solos are full of technical chal-
lenges but lack the use of musical phrases
or themes. This piece addresses these
areas, because the composer has written
this solo with excellent phrasing, plus
many changing dynamics. I would like to
see this solo on prescribed music lists for
contests.

This 113-measure rudimental snare drum solo will certainly challenge the intermediate to advanced soloist with traditional rudiments such as flam ac- cents, syncopated rhythms, cross-meter accents, and open rudimental rolls interspersed with buzz rolls. Conceived in a ternary structure, the solo breaks up some of the “squareness” of a traditional rudimental solo with changing meters such as 5/4, 7/8, and 5/8. The placement of difficult dynamics also enhances this unaccompanied snare drum solo. This piece would be an impressive selection for a college/university scholarship audition.

“Flam Tripaddidle” is a rudimental snare drum solo by Ithaca College per- cussionist and band conductor Richard Eleck. The two-page, easy-to-read score is printed in high quality on card stock. The piece is mostly in a rudimental style but employs a variety of dynamic contrasts with articulations and changin tempi in 4/4 throughout. This is a wise choice for percussion students wanting to work out their rudimental snare dru technique in a musically engaging and challenging composition at an interme- diate level. The rudimental techniques include open and closed rolls with a lot intricate flams and shifting accents.
A typo in measure 36 mistakenly beams beat 1 to the sixteenth-note triple starting beat 2. (This typo has been fixed in current edition. - Ed.) In the following measure (37), the same figure appears notated correctly, so this should be obvious to anyone preparing the piece for performance. This would make an excellent challenging solo piece for first or second year undergraduate students, as it would build technical and musical skills while provide an exciting experience for an audience.
