THESE DRUMS ALSO WALTZES
Greg HollowayA timpani solo with Hi-Hat and Ride Cymbal. Great piece utilizing classical timpani style and jazz-independence. This pieces is a dedication to Max Roach. The video below is performed by Tom Cox at Kenyon College.

Percussive Arts Society Review: This solo utilizes timpani as the main instrument, but also adds to the color palette by adding a hi-hat and ride cym-bal, making this similar to a multiple percussion work. It is written in a 3/4 waltz meter, but is to be performed in a jazz or swing feel, as the title is a clear tribute to Max Roach’s “The Drum Also Waltzes.” The timpani parts are written for three drums tuned to G, D, and F.

The initial material is a six-measure introduction, which features short rhythmic bursts, similar to what a drumset player would play in a solo. The first, long section is written for the tim-pani and ends with free improvisation. The solo next adds the hi-hat and cymbal, and the parts are creative in mixing the cymbal patterns and drum tones. In the middle of this section, the ride cymbal and hi-hat form a base, and the soloist freely improvises on the timpani for eight bars. The solo closes with the notated materials leading to a climax.

This solo is well within the reach of an advanced middle-school student, and should be fun for students showing interest in drumset performance. There are many dynamic changes in the final portion of the solo, and the parts are clearly notated. Students will love it. —George Frock
